The only Southeast Asian country to never have been under foreign rule, Thailand was borne out of Tai-Lao Chinese who migrated from their homeland. It, however, suffered from being divided internally throughout most of its history by a number of warring states like the Sukhothai, Chiangmai and Ayutthaya. Moreover, there was constant threat from its surrounding neighbors. After centuries of monarchy rule, it finally became a democratic state during the advent of the 1990s.
