/ Asia / Laos / Hua Phan / Historical Spots / Hintang Archeological Park

The Hintang Archeological Park is perhaps the most important pre-historic site in all of Laos. The whole park is littered with stone slab formations which can reach several meters in height. Also in the park are menhirs which are huge stone discs erected from the ground. Some of these discs can reach an astonishing 1 meter in diameter.

It is unknown to this day what the menhirs and other stone formations are for in the Hintang Archeological Park. There are several theories but none of them have found significant evidence to support the claims. What is known about these mysterious stone formations is that they were put there during the 11th or even 10th century BC. Most probably, the menhirs were developed by a highly advanced (during that time) civilization from the uplands of Southeast Asia.
