Pinned right at the middle of Himeji's contemporary office buildings and vehicle-crammed streets is the port city's crown jewel, Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and officially one of Japan's cultural treasures for its longevity and intricate detailing that blended well with its function as a structure for defense. Found near the castle is the idyllic Kokoen Garden, a collection of traditional-styled wall gardens where samurai homes used to stand.
