Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest dam, sits next to Yichang, making this city in Hubei Province an ideal take-off point to visit what is pegged as "China's most ambitious project since the Great Wall." Several ferries run from Yichang to the upstream of the Yangtze, a river that passes through the dam. Many luxury cruises also offer tours of Yichang and Chongqing that last from a night to four nights. The cruise trips often include segues to Fengdu, Lesser Three Gorges, and of course, the Three Gorges Dam. Just outside the city is Three Gorges Visitors' Cave and Park. The cave here houses poetry engraved in stone, while the park contains Sino-Japanese memorials, old defense walls, ancient city remains, and a river-viewing pavilion.
