One of the Great Wall's three greatest passes is Juyongguan, pinned in the 18-kilometer-long valley of Guangou in Changping County, about 50 kilometers away from Beijing. Constructed to defend ancient Beijing, Juyongguan or Juyong Pass is the cut of the Great Wall closest to a settlement. First built in the 5th century, Juyongguan was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty.
