Dumaguete Information

/ Asia / Philippines / Visayas / Negros / Negros Oriental / Dumaguete / Information

With its reputation as a university town, Dumaguete would probably evoke thoughts of dull streets fringed with libraries, and students balancing towers of books while walking. Negros Occidental's provincial center, however, is fathoms away from that idea. Dumaguete's immaculate natural wonders, interesting urban treks, and frenetic nightlife make for a holistic weekend treat not only for its undergraduate residents, but also for the wandering tourists who fancy an exhilarating escape from the city stress.

On the outskirts are a number of natural attractions thrill-seekers may want to try out. A popular lure is the nearby Bais Bay, found north of Dumaguete. One needn't be a marine biologist to have an excuse to meet and greet the friendly whales and dolphins found settling close to the shore. Those who would want a more in-depth experience with the aquatic life can head out to the Apo Island, considered as one of Philippines' prime diving spots.

Dumaguete features numerous universities teeming with galleries and museums, as well as rows of restaurants and inns which are a mere motorbike ride away from each other. An ideal jump-off is the Silliman University, found in the northern part of the town. Arguably, the highlight is the Anthropology Museum which displays an extensive collection of pre-colonial artifacts from Siquijor and the rest of the country.

It isn't difficult to find a good place to eat in Dumaguete, with the nearby food places that serve a range of mouth-watering treats, from gourmet Visayan cuisine to exotic street food. The enriching afternoon stroll is best rewarded by going to Rizal Boulevard, a local take on Manila's well-loved Roxas Boulevard. The bayside thoroughfare is lined with cafes and bars that come to life especially after sunset. Students from the universities flock together with friends for a nice drink or two or to form study groups in the quieter side of the street.
