Japan's lost-and-found are reliable, so if ever you do lose something while you're on the train, going to the Wasure-Mono ("lost things"; the Japanese Lost-and-Found Center) after a day or two is worth a try. You may also want to try asking the eki-cho ("Train Master") in train stations.
