Arrecife Travel Guide

/ Africa / Canary Islands / Lanzarote / Arrecife / Introduction

Striking a balance between the rustic and the modern, as well as the good and the bad, is Lanzarote's capital, Arrecife, a port town with Mediterranean-style esplanades and sandy beaches. Here, business districts are contrasted against farmlands, while castles, elegant boutiques and swanky hotels are juxtaposed to cracked buildings and shabby bars.

Gran Arrecife, the Canaries' tallest building, is the city's focal point that towers above the town's other sites of interest such as the beach, Playa Reducto, as well as Charco de San Ginés, a manmade lagoon filled with fishermen. The bridge that connects the city to the castle of Castillo de San Gabriel is Puente de Las Bolas, while Castillo de San Jose is a 17th century fortification that is now used to house modern art collections.
