Tacloban is steeped with history and culture as evident with the celebrated war memorials and the colorful festivals. The city got its name from the pioneering fishermen who lived in this town who used a taklub (a deep, narrow basket) to catch crabs and fish. Leyte's seat of power and commercial powerhouse, the city is a playground to the eye with the myriad of stores selling everything from fresh produce to nifty souvenirs to streets congested with vibrantly painted tricycles and jeepneys, to locals who stride past but never hesitate to offer a smile. The prime attraction in Tacloban is the war memorial built in honor of General Douglas Macarthur, an army general who paved the way to the island's (and eventually the country's) liberation from the grasp of Imperial Japan.
