Agusan del Sur Information

/ Asia / Philippines / Mindanao / Agusan del Sur / Information

The most populous province in the Caraga region, Agusan del Sur is a landlocked province whose virgin landscape has the vital components in turning into a veritable tourist-magnet: rich natural resources, vast forests with brimming flora and fauna, lush marsh and agricultural lands. Together with Its sister province Agusan Del Norte, Agusan del Sur offers boundless natural bounty and historical treasure influenced by the Majapahit Empire, the largest in Southeast Asia. Despite this regal reputation, the province remains humble and welcoming to its visitors.

A visit to Agusan Del Sur is a chance to delve into its sprawling wetland eco-system, the Agusan River and its catch basin Agusan Marshland, the sanctuary of the Manobo tribe who live in houses built on floating logs, similar to the stilt houses of the Orang Asli in Malaysia. The marshland is also a home to some exotic species like wild ducks, purple herons, sea eagles and storks, aside from the migratory birds that visit it in November. Other than a bountiful number of fauna, much of the area is covered with enormous green quilt of flora such as hyacinths, lily pads and other hydrophytic plants and swarmed by crocodiles, carp and freshwater turtles live.

Like, Agusan Del Norte, Agusan Del Sur has a surplus of waterfalls which can serve as worthwhile diversions after trailing the marshland. The list includes the Binaba, Bega and Tugonan Falls which have two to three tiers from where clear water plunges, guaranteed to soothe a weary soul.

Other attractions worth a peek include the Gibong River, the hot and cold springs of Mt. Diwata, the giant toog trees, and the underground stream straddling the Binaba Falls in Prosperidad, the capital of the province.

Aside from the bountiful blessings of nature, the people of Agusan Del Sur are also remarkable for their skills and talents seen during the festive Naliyagan festival in June. Natives display their dancing prowess and practice some indigenous rituals for the sheer delight of the viewing public. On the month of September, the Kaamulan Festival is celebrated wherein all the tribal leaders of the province commune together to present authentic tribal rites and ceremonies.
