Istana Maimun, also known as the Maimun Palace or simply as the Sultan's Palace is an important sight in Medan, not just for the locals but for visitors too. There is no fee in order to get into the palace but the reception desk would ask you for a modest donation. After that, you will have to sign your name and you are free to explore the palace.

The palace was erected in 1888 as ordered by then Sultan of Delhi, Makmum Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah. It covers almost three thousand square meters and boasts of thirty rooms in total. The interior design of the palace is particularly interesting as it mixes Malayan, Indian, Islamic, Spanish and even Italian cultural designs.
