Lingaraja Temple

/ Asia / India / Orissa / Bhubaneswar / Temples / Lingaraja Temple

It is believed that the Lingaraja Temple was originally built in the 7th century under the reign of Yayati Kesari. He was also responsible for moving the capital from Jaipur to Bhubaneswar. However, the current structure standing today only dates back to the 11th century, meaning it was rebuilt. As such, it is still the second oldest temple in Bhubaneswar and at the same time, it is the largest as well.

The Lingaraja Temple is one of the most noticeable monuments in Bhubaneswar as well. It stands more than 180 feet from the ground and it clearly represents the Kalinga architecture. Various images of Shiva and Vishnu can be seen along the walls and displays of the temple.
