A gold pot is believed to be at the end of every rainbow, and for the Great Wall of China, the gold pot is Dandong, a promising historical city at the border of China and North Korea in Liaoning Province. The far eastern end of the Great Wall is Dandong's Hushan (Tiger Mountain) Great Wall, which marks the start of Ming Dynasty's extension of the Great Wall and has stood there as an eye-witness to the city's long history as an ancient zhou Dynasty settlement, as a capital of the Andong Province during the 1930's Manchukuo era, and as today's influential port city all set to become a special "Border Economic Zone" for export and import between China and North Korea.

The Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge connects Dandong and Sinuiji, the closest North Korean town. It is also possible to walk through the other bridge that used to connect the two towns, Yalu Jiang Duan Quiao, which is now a half-bridge after being disassembled by Koreans and destroyed by fighter planes during the Korean War.

Yaluijiang Park provides the best spot to see North Korea from a distance but for those who want to see the country up close, or to see the inhabitants, speedboats can be rented to traverse the Yalu River, which separates North Korea from China. Along the river are a row of restaurants offering shiguo banfan or bibimbop (stonepot rice), huoguo (hotpot), xiangla gourou (spicy hotdog), and other North Korean delicacies served by North Korean waitresses.

There is a Ferris wheel overlooking Sinuiji, but this is believed to be an act of propaganda. For those who want to visit the area, it is possible to arrange group tours into Sinuiju by taking a train from Dandong, then another train in Pyongyang.

Apart from being the gate pass to North Korea, Pyongyang, Moscow and Russia, Dandong is also famous for its landmarks such as Cenotaph of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, a large museum built on a hill with bilingual exhibits in honor of the Chinese "Volunteers" Army. The city's biggest park, Jinjiang Mountain, used to be a Chinese army lookout. A bus from Dandong takes visitors to Gushan town, where Dagu or Lonely Mountain enchants visitors through the several Tang dynasty Taoist temples.
