Swimming with the jellyfishes

If you are planning to go swimming in Australia, it is best to know first if there are jellyfish swimming there too at the time!  Australia is notorious for its box jellyfish, which are some of the most toxic creatures on the planet.  They are almost invisible in water, and are nearly 3 meters long.  If you unfortunately get caught in its tentacles, you'll likely suffer much pain before dying.  Although there is an anti-venom for jellyfish, there is only a small window of opportunity for that.

The most effective way to avoid them is not going swimming during the months of October to May.  And even if you take to the seas in June to September, do remember to take the necessary precautions and only swim at patrolloed beaches.  Bring along some vinegar too: they are effective first aid for jellyfish stings.
