Fort Siloso

/ Asia / Singapore / Historical Spots / Fort Siloso

One of the most interesting sites to behold in Singapore is Fort Siloso. This fort was built by the British in 1880 in order to protect the western part of the Singapore harbor. It is the only remaining British fortification in the city-state today. It has a long standing, and sometimes dark, history. It was used as a POW concentration camp during the Japanese occupation which lasted from 1942 to 1945. After the island was turned over to the Singaporean government in 1967, Fort Siloso found a new lease in life when it was turned into a tourist attraction by Sentosa Development Corporation. Today, the fort serves as a reminder to veterans of the war and as a place to learn about the history of the country. Tourists can visit the site from 10am to 6pm daily.
