If you want to avoid the crowds, go to Machu Picchu on April when it is off-peak and prices for goods and services are still relatively cheap. The weather, on the other hand, is cool but dry and not freezing.
Peak season in Machu Picchu is from June to August and coincides with the summer vacation in Europe and North America. The weather during these months are also bitingly freezing--both in Cusco and Machu Picchu.
