Hanuman Dhoka

/ Asia / Nepal / Kathmandu / Historical Spots / Hanuman Dhoka

Hanuman Dhoka was used by the Malla Kings as their Royal Palace from the time it was built around the 16th century until 1886. The eastern wing of the Royal Palace is the oldest part. During the 17th century, King Pratap Malla renovated and enlarged the existing buildings and added more temples.

The Royal Family then moved to Narayan Hitti Palace in 1886, thus closing down Hanuman Dhoka. Still, the palace was used for several occasions including coronations and other ceremonies important to the king.

Entrance to the Hanuman Dhoka is found at the western side.
