The official name of Masjid Besi is Masjid Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin or the Iron Mosque. Construction of this modern Islamic structure started in April of 2004. The name of the mosque was derived from the fact that it was built using six thousand tons of steel, or seventy percent of the entire building. The mosque is able to accommodate up to twenty thousand people at one time. Covering more than 73,000 square meters, construction cost of Masjid Besi is around RM180 million.

Although they estimated the mosque to be built by the end of 2008, it was only opened in August 2009. The architecture of the mosque is used wire mesh for the outer walls for natural light to come in and for ventilation purposes. The contractor of Masjid Besi was Ahmad Zaki Resources Berhad.
