Caesarea History

Middle East > Israel > Caesarea > history

Caesarea is a city founded by King Herod in 10 B.C. The development of the kingdom for centuries resulted to a conurbation of Eretz Israel. The urban settlement, which became a Roman l capital, was subjugated for the first time in its history by the commander of the armies of the first Caliph, Amr ibn al-Khattab. Caesarea continued to exist as a real city although certainly affected by the changes in regime between the Muslim dynasty and by Byzantine Empire.

Caesarea is a significant site in the Christian history. It was the place where Pontius Pilate governed during the time of Jesus. This is also the place where Simon Peter converted the Roman, Cornelius, the first non-Jew to believe in Jesus.
