Hall of the Crusader Knights

/ Middle East / Israel / Akko / Historical Spots / Hall of the Crusader Knights

Close to the sea at the northwest corner of the old city is the Hall of the Crusader Knights. This is a large compound that covers some 4,500 square meters and was believed to be used as a barracks by the Knights of the Hospital of Saint John or "Hospitallers" before they were driven out of Jerusalem in 1187 by Saladin. The city was reclaimed when Richard the Lion Heart headed the New Crusade in 1191. This was the last stronghold of the Crusaders in the Holy Land.

Today, tourists can visit the Hall of the Crusader Knights that now lies 7-8 meters underground. The excavations were able to reconstruct the main buildings of the stronghold including the main headquarters of the crusaders. The entrance to the site is located under the Ottoman/British Citadel.
