/ Asia / India / Rajasthan / Jaipur / Sights / Hawa Mahal

Also known as the Palace of Winds, the Hawa Mahal is found in Jaipur, India. It was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799. The design of the palace was patterned by Lal Chand Usta after the crown of Krishna who is a Hindu god. This palace building extends the women's chambers of the City Palace so that the royal ladies can observe the everyday life of regular citizens without being seen.

The Hawa Mahal is five stories high and was constructed using red and pink sandstone which is highlighted with quick lime. There is a total of 953 windows where the women can peak through and also serves as a natural ventilation system. The palace is cool even in the hottest summer months.
