India is a vast and diverse country. Extreme diversity, which permeates its culture, language, ethnicity, climate and geography, both fascinates and baffles a visitor. The earliest archaeological findings of human habitation has been traced back to 7000 BC. The country is believed to be the birthplace of four major religions of the world Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. The country was under Islamic occupation from 8th Century to 18th Century, before coming under the British rule. India attained independence in 1947 after a prolonged struggle.
