The Kossou Dam was built in 1973 in the Bandama River of Yamoussukro. Upon the construction of the dam, the artificial lake that was created is the largest in the whole country. However, about 85,000 people had to be relocated due to the lake.

Today, the Kossou Dam is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the city. Aside from the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, this is the most visited attraction in Yamoussoukro. It is also considered to be the most expensive hydroelectric project of the country as well. It provides a maximum energy output of 176 megawatt power to the city.
